This wikibook is not about the style or content of what you do with your zine, since it can contain almost anything you want that's the joy of zines!

This guide aims to be fairly international and not connected to any particular "scene", so there aren't any addresses or country-specific things e. Hopefully you'll find it useful. To some extent the way you write your pages depends on what you're doing. If it's a zine of your hand-drawn cartoons then your best option is to hand-draw some cartoons.

If it's an art zine then the appearance is going to be defined by what you're trying to achieve artistically. And so on. But here are some things to bear in mind:. Typewriters are great and can make good-looking text that's not as boring as printed-out text from a computer, yet more legible than handwriting However you can get a typewriter on eBay for pretty cheap, also check garage sales and thrift stores or even ask friends or relatives who have updated to computers.

OK, so computers are capable of quite a lot, and we can't possibly cover all of it here. People also use it to incorporate things from other sources. It can look brilliant; but at the same time if you're just taking someone else's work and dropping it into your own zine then you haven't really done anything. Practically, remember the thing about contrast if you're going to be making copies.

Also remember that if you're cutting-and-pasting from glossy paper such as magazines then it can sometimes photocopy really badly because the gloss on the paper just shines when it gets in the photocopier, and you end up with a bright white thing instead of your desired image at least partially. If you've cut and pasted your stuff all together then it can be very helpful to photocopy it to get a kind of "master copy" that doesn't have bits everywhere.

Photos rarely photocopy nicely. Choose ones with lots of contrasts, not too much detail e.

If you can, you can probably improve results by scanning a photo, adjusting it fiddle with the brightness, increase the contrastand printing it back out again. I've seen some really good zines that make use of sewing, cross-stitch, and crafty things like that. If you're going to be photocopying or something like that, then you can still do crafty things like this, as they can often come out quite well when copied you'll need to have good colour contrasts though. If you're going to hand-make the crafty bits on each copy then of course you have more freedom and can make perhaps more exciting items, but of course you need dedicationIt is very easy to publish zines in the classroom because, in their most basic form, they require only paper, scissors, and a photocopier.

Since these materials are readily available in most schools, you may already have everything you need to start making zines today. Welcome to Zine Making ! A zine pronounced zeen is a self-published mini-magazine. From different sizes to focusing on an assortment of topics, there are many various types of zines out there.

While always pursuing free expression and distribution of ideas, zines have a long and fascinating history in the literary world. This history, in fact, is not without a healthy dose of antiestablishment rebellion.

Writers of self-published zines create and share their ideas without restriction and free from the approval of an established publisher or, worse yet, a meddlesome editor. War for Independence, perfectly demonstrates the revolutionary and rebellious nature of zines. Constructing a zine is not hard at all. Copied link to guide! Before there was stan twitter there was the fanzinecreated originally by sci-fi enthusiasts of the early twentieth century who used the medium as a forum for dialogue, free from corporate editors or publishers. That same do-it-yourself ethos is what drew punks of the late twentieth century to embrace fanzines as a complement to their music, and as a means to challenge mainstream ideologies. While the latter of these was critiqued for being primarily white and heteronormative, overall, these movements used zines to subvert dominant and patriarchal ideologies through the sharing of lived experiences.

At the core of the zine-making ethos are subversion, freedom of thought, and a DIY attitude. As is the nature of capitalism, corporations increasingly appropriated the practice as time went on; however, even today, zine-making remains a cornerstone for marginalized voices disseminating information and publishing creative work about things they love.

Zines tend to be a bricolage of various images, texts, and messages.

You can ask for people to submit poems, illustrations, essays, collages, etc. If you do decide to work with other people, just make sure everyone is on the same page on their role as a contributor or collaborator.

For example, how will contributors be credited? Will they be compensated? Communicating openly about these questions before anything goes awry is always a good idea. Along these same lines, as you put your zine together, make sure you only use visuals or any type of content that you have the rights to.

How specific can you get in terms of what it will cover, what types of content it will include, and what it will look like? And, overall, what kind of impression do you want to give your reader as they take it all in? Having answers to these questions will help you come up with a creative direction the way it looks, the way it feels, and what it includes that can effectively communicate your ideas while also feeling intriguing and cohesive to your readers.
