I have been blown away by the capability of the Sonoff-Tasmota firmware for the Sonoff devices. The Sonoff-Tasmota firmware enables a good deal more than the as-supplied Sonoff units. Some examples have appeared showing sensors, such as temperature and humidity being wired in. I was concerned that this might be unsafe and may not comply with EU and US regulations because the Sonoff circuit boards may not meet the requirements for double insulation.

The track separation distances on the Sonoff Basic do not appear to comply. The development here gives an alternative and safe way to explore the additional capability. This board can be powered for most applications via a USB charger.

It took a while to find some of the code needed and hopefully this reference will smooth the way to whatever automation task you have in mind.

Node-Red has been used as the automation client, running on a Raspberry Pi. The examples should however be easily transferable to other platforms. Quite a few of these can be handled by a single ESP12! The system does not support both types of LED strings on one device. The board is small and cheap enough that one would be happy to use it for just one of these features.

The principles can be applied to other setups and breadboard based development. I will show the connections and initial programming for each of these devices and then show an automation example — turning on an electric blanket in time for bedtime, if the room temperature is below a selected value. The same result could be achieved via breadboard or stripboard, but the PCB makes a much neater solution. These have an on resistance of 50mohms with only 2. There will be plenty more options.

Check for working voltage over 15V and on resistance below mohms with 3v gate voltage. My approach to PCB making is to print the artwork twice onto tracing paper. I then overlay these to double the contrast and cover any small imperfections in the printing I use a laser printer. I use weak sodium hydroxide solution drain cleaner to develop and Di-Sodium Peroxodisulphate Hexahydrate to etch. Take special precautions with the chemicals, especially the sodium hydroxide that attacks flesh instantly. I then expose again and develop to get rid of the film over the tracks and finish off with some immerse tin quite expensive — and limited life.

The latter step is optional.This is a Tuya device but I wanted to avoid signing up to the Tuya cloud service to operate my ceiling fan under all circumstances. In this article I just wanted to share a few learnings and observations. Like many other devices the controller uses the ESP to communicate with the world and a separate MCU to control the fan and lights.

Taking the old ceiling fan for a smart spin

Thanks to some amazing pre-work in the HA community forum I did not have to start at zero. Still, the learning curve is pretty steep if you have never used Tasmota before and the concept is quite different to ESPHome which has become my number one choice when adopting ESP devices into my home automation system.

In the meantime a new Tasmota major release has been published, and I have flashed a standard image, using version 7. I have adopted plenty of Tuya devices using Tuya-Convert. I am now using a dedicated Raspberry Pi 3 running Raspbian It is connected via Ethernet to my network so that I keep full remote control while Tuya-Convert uses the WiFi adapter. There are 3 items that need to be mapped to Tasmota controls. The following configuration worked for me and correctly linked light and dimmer, and also automatically generated a light entity and fan power switch entity using auto-discovery. The driver itself has a control input which is not compatible with the fan controller. Instead the fan controller dims by changing the voltage which would make the LED to blink.

To avoid that I just limited the dimmer range. The following rule listens to changes coming from the MCU and initiated by using the remote control. Each code corresponds to a fan speed, and the action then publishes the current speed value via MQTT so that Home Asssistant can update the fan entity. I decided to go with non-retained messages in this case and instead query the speed on Home Assistant start-up. The second rule listens to incoming triggers initiated from changing the speed of the Home Assistant fan entity.

I configured auto-discovery which generates a status sensor, a light switch and a power switch for the fan. This also swaps the MQTT command and topic around. Assuming that you have MQTT already set up in general, the new device should automatically appear in Home Assistant, and you should see 3 entities:. The following automation is required to retrieve the latest state of the fan — power and speed.

It executes two commands with empty payloads which should trigger the device to send the current state as a result. After having deployed many ESP based devices already, I found it quite useful to keep some information about the device itself in HA.

Unfortunately it turned out that the speed control did not really work with that fan, i. This is a better fit and the 3 speeds actually work. The built-in lamp can be turned on and off, but like the LED in the Spyda fan, the lamp in this ceiling fan does not support dimming.

I am now still left with a new ceiling fan without smart control. Luckily there are alternatives, and I am in the process of adopting a SRL Tech fan controller which has turned out to work very similarly like the Brilliant one. I will share a working configuration as soon as possible.

I will look for a generic way that csv payloads can be extracted into devices. Also need to fix the [ ] parsing in the payload. Without real hardware it may be difficult to learn this specific design area. Do you have the specific Github issue number where this was reported?

HSB doesn't affect channel4. Any color command sent, resets channel4. I believe you are right, any way to manually "crop" the status payload? I can handle the extraction of the RGB part for the color picker.

The data from your first post shows FF which would indicate red was the actual light color. I am just trying to find where truth lies. What is your actual use of the color picker if it is not available on HSTouch?The latest driver can be found here. Why this driver? There's a lot of confusion on which Tasmota driver to use with HE, for some reason there are those that have an issue with using a modified version of Tasmota. Even the version using Rules is using polling for certain things.

With this said, if you're new to using Tasmota, use this driver. If you for some reason don't want to use a non-original release of Tasmota, understand the limitations of other solutions and live with those.

It is much more optimized and handles many more devices in a way which is much easier to install and use. Basically it is ONE parent driver and the child drivers and devices are auto-detected and auto-installed for most types of devices and configurations. Background My plan is to maintain irregularly updated versions of Tasmota with Hubitat support. Some are Tuya-based others are Sonoff.
